Students excel at WCVM awards night

More than 400 people — including many proud parents and families — gathered in Saskatoon for the Western College of Veterinary Medicine's 2012 Fall Awards Program and White Coat Ceremony on September 28.

The annual event recognizes the scholastic and volunteer achievements of students in all four years of the WCVM's Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. By the end of the evening, WCVM's high achievers received nearly $100,000 worth of awards and scholarships.

A new award this year was the Dr. David Stark Mature Student Award — a $2,500 award that recognizes an entering student in the WCVM's DVM program who has made the decision to change careers to veterinary medicine. First-year veterinary student Kyle Clarke was the first recipient of the award that was created by Stark, a Saskatoon endodontist.

Several other key awards are also given to WCVM graduate students, faculty and staff during the fall awards program. To view the full list of award recipients, download a copy of the WCVM 2012 Fall Awards Program.

After all of the awards were handed out, the 80 members of the WCVM's Class of 2016 paraded into the banquet room with their personalized lab coats slung over their arms — a gift from the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA). Once the students slipped on their new white coats, they received stethoscopes from representatives of their respective provincial veterinary medical associations.

This year, the WCVM's first-year students represent 48 communities across the four western provinces and the northern territories. The Class of 2016 includes 21 students from B.C., 21 Alberta-based students, 20 students from Saskatchewan, 16 students from Manitoba and two students from the Yukon.
