WCVM students excel at annual U of S research expo

The University of Saskatchewan’s annual Life and Health Sciences Research Expo was held on May 3, with many of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) students clinching top honours in the event’s categories.

The university’s annual expo is a showcase for interdisciplinary health science research throughout the province and across both basic and clinical sciences. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Richard Schulz, a professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pharmacology at the University of Alberta.

This year, five WCVM graduate students won awards in the following categories:

Basic Science 1

  • Second place: Arinjay Banerjee (supervisor: Dr. Vikram Misra, Veterinary Microbiology)

Basic Science 4

  • First place: Mengying Liu (supervisor: Dr. Susantha Gomis, Veterinary Pathology)
  • Second place: Yao Lu (supervisor: Dr. Yan Zhou, Veterinary Microbiology)

Basic Science 6

  • Second place: Sonu Subudhi (supervisor: Dr. Vikram Misra, Veterinary Microbiology)

Clinical 1

  • Second place: Kalhari Goonewardene (supervisor: Dr. Susantha Gomis, Veterinary Pathology)

Best Interdisciplinary

  • First place: Kalhari Goonewardene (supervisor: Dr. Susantha Gomis, Veterinary Pathology)

Best Paper Awards

  • Best Basic Science Paper: Arinjay Banerjee (supervisor: Dr. Vikram Misra, Veterinary Microbiology)
  • Best Clinical Papers (tied for first place): Kalhari Goonewardene (supervisor: Dr. Susantha Gomis, Veterinary Pathology)
