U of S graduate wins toxicology award

Dominic Hauck, a recent U of S graduate, earned third place in the student platform (oral) competition at the annual meeting of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in November 2010. Held in Portland, Ore., the international conference attracted about 2,500 delegates — including hundreds of student presenters.

Working with Dr. David Janz from the WCVM's Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences, Hauck conducted research into the impact of metal mining discharges on the spottail shiner (Notropis hudsonius), a breed of small-bodied fish found downstream from a mine.

Hauck earned his Bachelor of Science (toxicology, Honours) degree from the U of S in 2010 and is currently pursuing his Master of Science degree at Memorial University in St. John's, N.L.

SETAC is a non profit, international professional society that aims to support the development of principles and practices for protection, enhancement and management of sustainable environmental quality and ecosystem integrity.
