B.C. graduate earns Faculty Gold Medal

The Western College of Veterinary Medicine's highest student honour was presented to 2012 veterinary graduate Dr. James Kirkham on June 7 during the University of Saskatchewan's Spring Convocation in Saskatoon, Sask.

Kirkham, who was born and raised in Squamish, B.C., accepted the college's Faculty Gold Medal from WCVM Dean Dr. Douglas Freeman shortly after receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Kirkham is one of 76 students who graduated from the veterinary college this spring.

Each year, the WCVM faculty awards the Gold Medal to the graduating student who has shown the highest proficiency in the science and art of veterinary medicine during the four years of study toward the DVM degree.

Kirkham, who graduated with Great Distinction from the WCVM, has earned numerous awards, scholarships and a place on the Dean's Honour Roll throughout his academic career. Before coming to the WCVM, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 2007 from the University of British Columbia with a major in animal biology.

During the veterinary college's summer breaks, Kirkham worked at the WCVM's Veterinary Medical Centre as well as Garibaldi Veterinary Hospital in his hometown and Amherst Veterinary Hospital in Toronto, Ont. Kirkham's next move is to Nanaimo, B.C., where he will practise in a small animal veterinary clinic before enrolling in graduate work.
