Vet of the year honour for WCVM graduate

Western College of Veterinary Medicine alumnus Dr. Tye Perrett of Okotoks, Alta., is the Boehringer Ingelheim WCABP Veterinarian of the Year for 2012.

The award was presented to Perrett during the Western Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners' annual meeting that took place in Calgary from January 19-21, 2012.

Perrett, who graduated from the WCVM in 1999, practised at the Lethbridge Animal Clinic until 2004 when he joined Feedlot Health Management Services (FHMS) in Okotoks. Now a managing partner, Perrett is extensively involved in the FHMS research activities including project development, field work, data summary and analysis, economic modelling, report generation and presentation of results in Canada and the United States.

Perrett has authored or co-authored 12 peer-reviewed articles and has presented the results of commercial field trials at various conferences in North America. In addition, he has authored or co-authored 25 technical reports and has helped to lead three national and international trade mission tours organized by the Canada Beef Export Federation. Every fall, Perrett also instructs and mentors senior veterinary students who attend Alberta's three-week food animal veterinary student feedlot externship.

Perrett is a past-president of the WCABP (2007) and served as one of the organization's directors from 2004-2006 and from 2008-2010. As well, he served as the inaugural president of the Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners (CABV) from 2007-2009 and remained as a CABV director from 2010-2011.

"In the various capacities that Tye has served the WCABP and CABV, he has demonstrated his rational, calm approach, his willingness to listen to the concerns of others, impartial judgment, integrity and impressive leadership skills, " wrote Dr. Calvin Booker (WCVM '89), Perrett's colleague at FHMS. "Despite his rather unassuming demeanour, Tye always gets his points across in an effective and professional manner."

Perrett is the 18th western Canadian bovine practitioner to receive the Boehringer Ingelheim WCABP Veterinarian of the Year award since its creation in 1995.
