WCVM grad students receive U of S awards

Eleven graduate students at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) received awards for their scientific posters during the University of Saskatchewan's Life and Health Sciences Research Day on March 9.

The annual event, which is organized by the U of S College of Medicine, attracted graduate students from health science colleges and schools across campus. Competition was intense with U of S students presenting nearly 200 research posters in 19 categories.

Among the WCVM award recipients were eight graduate students from the Department of Veterinary Microbiology who took home first place in four different categories and won all of the prizes offered in both microbiology categories.

Three graduate students from the WCVM Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences also received two firsts and a second place in three other categories. Here are more details about the WCVM award recipients:
    • First prize in the cell signalling category: Nicole House, graduate student, Veterinary Biomedical Sciences. Supervisor: Dr. Baljit Singh.
    • Third prize in the cell signalling category: Rupali, graduate student, Veterinary Microbiology. Supervisor: Dr. Vikram Misra.
    • Second prize in the environmental toxicology category: Jon Doering, graduate student, Veterinary Biomedical Sciences. Supervisor: Dr. John Giesy.
    • First prize in the epidemiology, social, cultural and population health category: Janna Schurer, graduate student, Veterinary Microbiology. Supervisor: Dr. Emily Jenkins.
    • Third prize in the genetics and molecular biology category: Rui Zhang, graduate student, Veterinary Microbiology. Supervisor: Dr. Vikram Misra.

Besides the research poster competition, another highlight of the Life and Health Sciences Research Day was the keynote speech by Dr. Andrew Potter, director and CEO of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization-International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac).

Potter, who is also a professor in the WCVM's Department of Veterinary Microbiology, spoke about "Pandemics, epidemics and other 'emics: solutions to emerging infectious diseases."
