Former grad student will lead Genome Prairie

A former Western College of Veterinary Medicine graduate student will become the new president and chief executive officer of Genome Prairie on April 1.

Dr. Reno Pontarollo, who is Genome Prairie's current chief scientific officer, earned his PhD in 1995 under the supervision of Dr. Lorne Babiuk in the WCVM's Department of Veterinary Microbiology.

Pontarollo's primary areas of research include genomics, molecular biology, vaccine development and immunology. His academic credentials also include a BSc from the University of Saskatchewan and an MBA from Athabasca University.

Genome Prairie is a non-profit organization that supports and manages large-scale genomics research projects in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It aligns partners and resources to develop and manage research projects addressing key regional priorities such as agriculture, human health and the environment.

"As chief scientific officer, Dr. Pontarollo demonstrated strong leadership that has resulted in the successful development and management of a number of large-scale research initiatives across Manitoba and Saskatchewan," said Dr. Arnold Naimark, chair of Genome Prairie's board of directors.

"His commitment to the Prairie research community is well recognized, and I am confident in his ability to lead the organization toward continued success."

Pontarollo has held research appointments at Canada's Department of National Defence (Medical Countermeasures Section) and at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization-International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac).

Before joining Genome Prairie in 2005, Pontarollo was director of research for Pyxis Genomics where he led a program on innate immunity. He also has a strong background and interest in agriculture that was acquired in the family cattle business near Cardston, Alta.

During the next few months, Pontarollo will work closely with Dr. David Gauthier, Genome Prairie's current president and CEO, to lay the foundation of a long-term strategy that will focus on the implementation of new regional initiatives and partnerships.
