$vPageSummary

Food safety and public health specialist Dr. Nigel French gave the 2014 D.L.T. Smith Lecture on Tuesday evening, Mar. 11, at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM).

French, who is a professor of food safety and veterinary public health at Massey University in New Zealand, talked about controlling zoonoses — diseases or infections that are transmissible between animals and people.

His presentation focused on how advances in microbial genetics and pathogen evolution are transforming epidemiology and public health.

In addition to the evening lecture, French gave an earlier lunch-hour public presentation on "Emerging zoonotic diseases."

Videos of French's two WCVM presentations are now available online (a University of Saskatchewan network services ID or NSID is required to access the files):

Besides his professorship, French is the director of the Infectious Disease Research Centre and head of the Molecular Epidemiology and Public Health Laboratory in the Hopkirk Research Institute.

The prestigious D.L.T. Smith Lecture was established in 1974 to mark the end of Dr. D.L.T. (Larry) Smith's 10-year tenure as the first dean of the WCVM.

The program annually supports scholarly lectures for the veterinary profession that are delivered by preeminent speakers from around the world.
