The Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) alumna was installed as the equine organization's new president on Dec. 8 during the AAEP's annual convention in Las Vegas, Nev. She was first named as vice-president of the organization in 2014.
Raised in Merritt, B.C., Anderson was actively involved with horses as an eventing competitor, international competition groom, barn manager and racetrack exercise rider before attending veterinary school. She obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1986 from the WCVM.
Following graduation, Anderson entered private practice in South Hamilton, Mass., under United States Equestrian Team veterinarian Dr. A. Martin Simensen. Since 1993 she has owned Equine Veterinary Care in Fair Hill, Md., a three-doctor ambulatory practice with outpatient clinic facilities that specializes in thoroughbred race horse and event horse care.
Anderson was profiled in the Autumn 2006 issue of Horse Health Lines where she spoke about her memories of the WCVM and her work with Barbaro, winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby, and other champion racehorses at Fair Hill. In June 2015, Anderson was one of the featured presenters at the WCVM's annual June Conference during the college's 50th anniversary celebrations.
An AAEP member since 1986, Anderson has volunteered as an AAEP on-call representative since 1997. In addition to serving on the organization's board of directors, she has been a member of numerous AAEP committees and has presented at the annual convention on issues of practice management and care of race and performance horses.
The AAEP, based in Lexington, Ky., was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse. AAEP reaches more than five million horse owners through its 9,000-plus members worldwide. The equine organization is actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and continuing education in the equine veterinary profession and horse industry.
