WCVM alumnus and Manitoba veterinarian appointed to Order of Canada
Dr. Kenneth Mould (DVM), alumnus of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) and a retired Manitoba veterinarian, has been appointed a member of the Order of Canada.
By Rigel SmithThis prestigious honour recognizes Mould’s significant contributions to Canadian veterinary health care and his decades-long commitment to improving the lives of animals and their owners.
Gov. Gen. Mary Simon made 88 new appointments to the Order of Canada on Dec 18. Appointees include one companion, 24 officers and 63 members.
Mould, who is originally from Saskatoon, Sask., graduated from the WCVM in 1975 and practised as a small animal veterinarian at Centennial Animal Hospital in Winnipeg, Man., for 35 years. Mould is the founder and president of the Canadian Animal Blood Bank (CABB), a non-profit organization that has provided a reliable supply of high-quality canine blood products for over 25 years. His visionary leadership has shaped the CABB into a vital resource for veterinary clinics and hospitals, providing whole blood products across Canada.
Mould’s dedication to volunteering began in 1995 when he took up a challenge presented at a veterinary conference to establish a blood bank for animals. He spearheaded the development of the Manitoba Animal Blood Bank in 1996, which later expanded into the national CABB. Under his leadership as the sole president of the board of directors, the organization has facilitated over 30,000 canine blood donations. The blood bank is supported by more than 2,000 volunteer donors as well as veterinarians, veterinary technologists and companion animal owners.
Beyond his work with the CABB, Mould has played pivotal roles in shaping Canada’s veterinary profession. Mould served as president of the Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) in 1980 and president of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) in 1993-94. His past awards include MVMA Veterinarian of the Year and CVMA Small Animal Practitioner of the Year, and in 2024, he was made a Life Member of the MVMA. Mould has also been an active supporter of local and national nature conservation initiatives.
