Undergraduate students display research at WCVM poster day
Following a summer of research, a group of University of Saskatchewan (USask) undergraduate students presented their findings at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s (WCVM) annual undergraduate research poster day on September 2.
By WCVM TodayFaculty, staff and students enjoyed a barbecue lunch provided by the WCVM while supporting the 26 students who displayed their research posters in the college’s hallways. Among the visitors were volunteer judges who reviewed the students’ posters before submitting their final choices.
Dr. Lynn Weber, WCVM’s associate dean (research and graduate studies), announced the award recipients during an afternoon reception. The first-place winner received a $500 prize, while second- and third-place recipients were awarded $300 and $200, respectively.
First place: Zahin Akhand (supervisor: Dr. Adelaine Leung, Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences). Poster title: “Fat body-specific Nucb1 knockdown alters growth and energy storage in male drosophila.”
Second place (tied): Yoana Reyes Morales (supervisor: Dr. Vanessa Cowan, Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences). Poster title: “Assessing ear temperature using infrared thermography in beef cattle-fed ergot alkaloids and soybean-derived isoflavones.”
Second place (tied): Elizabeth Rudderham (supervisors: Drs. Al Chicoine and Vanessa Cowan, Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences). Poster title: “The effects of co-administration of intranasal naloxone and atipamezole on sedated dogs and evaluation of efficacy for reversal of xylazine and fentanyl-induced sedation.”
Third place: Addisyn Lepp (supervisor: Dr. Dinesh Dadarwal, Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences). Poster title: “More than body condition: pre-breeding magnesium and zinc status predict fixed-time AI success in beef cattle.”
