Dr. Claire Beneke receives Faculty Gold Medal

Veterinary graduate Claire (nee Miles) Beneke received the Western College of Veterinary Medicine's highest honour during the University of Saskatchewan's Spring Convocation in Saskatoon on June 6.

WCVM Dean Dr. Douglas Freeman presented the college's Faculty Gold Medal to Beneke shortly after she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Beneke, who was born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., is one of 76 students who graduated from the veterinary college this spring.

Each year, the WCVM faculty awards the Gold Medal to the graduating student who has shown the highest proficiency in the science and art of veterinary medicine during the four years of study toward the DVM degree.

Beneke graduated from the WCVM with Great Distinction and has earned numerous awards and scholarships as well as a place on the Dean's Honour Roll throughout her academic career. In 2008, before she began her studies at the WCVM, she received a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours from the University of British Columbia with a major in Agroecology.

Last summer during the veterinary college break, Beneke worked at a small animal practice in Vancouver, B.C. She will now begin her veterinary career at Vancouver's Amherst Veterinary Hospital.
